Waiting!

Right now, we are in a season of waiting. Some wait for basketball, hockey or wrestling seasons to get started. Some wait for significant snowfall so they can take out their skis. Students and teachers alike are waiting for the Christmas break.

We spend much of our lives waiting for something. I read that we spend 8 hours a year waiting at stop lights. I read that we spend 45 minutes a day waiting for things – someone to answer their phone, the computer to turn on, family to show up at the table.

Some people wait in hope. Children look forward to growing up. Teenagers can’t wait for an upcoming dance. A pregnant couple is excited about the coming of a new child. Grandparents look forward to family returning for a celebration.

Other people wait anxiously. Parents wait for their teenagers to come home. Students fear the announcement of their test scores. Older people wait for the doctor to call with the results o their tests.

Advent, this time from the beginning of December to Christmas, is a season of anticipation. It is a hopeful waiting. Charles Peguy saw hope as a little girl who goes off to school between her two big sisters, faith and love, holding each by the hand. In the eyes of those who see the three sisters passing, little hope is being guided by the other two; in fact, however, little hope is pulling forward the two who seem to be leading her.

In Advent, we wait for the birth of Christ. We hope for this salvation. We have faith in this small child. We love this Bethlehem story. This waiting with hope is a peculiar thing – we wait for something we already possess.

As the Body of Christ, the Church waits in hope. Zion Lutheran is always in anticipation for what God is going to do with us next. Where will the Holy Spirit lead us? What is our mission, our calling? Who will inspire us with a new vision?

May God grant us peace in this time of anticipation. May our eyes and hearts be ready for God’s surprising grace. May we leap towards our new ministries as we serve Christ by sharing God’s love.

Pastor Paul
